This place has got to be the most horrific hospital I have ever had the misfortune to interact with. I genuinely despise it with every fibre of my being. To date, I have been placed on the sovereign ward twice. Each lastly approximately two weeks. The first time I went in voluntarily (after having a breakdown) and only agreed because I was told that by going in voluntarily, I would be allowed to have visitors and leave the premises when I liked for fresh air. However, 24 hours after being admitted, my family tried to visit and were refused. To compromise, I then said that I would simply go into the car park to sit with them but was told that if I attempted to leave, the staff would be forced to retrieve me. Then, a day before I was discharged, my CBT visited and asked if I had signed any admission forms (which I hadn’t). She then raised this with them and they then made me sign the forms 13 days after I was admitted and 24 hours before being discharged. Just before being discharged, a nursed came to me with another form of questions about my mental state. I answered honestly, saying that I was still very depressed. However, I later got a copy of this form and in it she had said that I was in a much better frame of mind and had frequently made use of my freedom to leave the site for free air (I had not once left the ward let alone the building). In addition, while there, they frequently lost both blood and urine samples and the personal belongings of the patients (which actually resulted in two patients arguing as one thought the other had taken his things, only for the staff that had to later find it). The nurses also constantly hid away in the office leaving the patients to their devises and when they did interact with us, they spoke to us with such distain and/or indifference that when my family overheard an exchange I had with a particularly vicious nurse while I was on the phone to them, they were so appalled that they then rung the ward immediately. The staff did not check to see if I was eating, drinking, or cleaning myself at any time. These things pale in comparison though to some of the most egregious issues. They repeatedly entered my room calling me by the wrong name (they had gotten me confused with another patient), and they even let another patient into my room thinking it was his. Perhaps worst of all though was that they, through both stays, consistently medicated me incorrectly, or made purposeful changes to my meds without telling me. Each morning and evening they would hand me tablets and when I would challenge them, they would simply say “so you’re refusing your medication”. I would try to explain that I would take my meds if they were correct, but it didn’t make a difference because their attitude was “well you’re mad so you don’t know anything”. In the end I was forced to sit outside their office and refused to move until I spoke with the doctor. She then showed up, after hiding away in her own office for days, to corroborate what I had told them about my medications. All I can say about this place is that if I did not have my family for support and my fate lay entirely in the hands of the doctors and nurses in Atherleigh Park, I would likely be dead now. Many are shockingly cruel and unnecessarily spiteful. They’re so lazy that any other business would’ve sacked them, and they are down right dangerous. The fact that they have been given the responsibility of distributing medications to vulnerable people is tragic. The only good thing I can say about the place is that the cleaners worked hard and showed more compassion than the sorry excuses that are its “mental health professionals”.

2 weeks agoThis was the worst care I have ever received. I can only hope that not all hospitals reflect the institutional mistreatment and lack of compassion that defined past eras. There was a clear lack of genuine patient care. Staff routinely ignored patients—even after a suicide attempt. Instead, they were often seen standing around in the office talking among themselves, appearing more interested in casual chatter than in meaningful engagement with those under their care. Procedures seemed to matter more than people. Clinical notes contained reductionist language that showed no insight into the complexities of my condition. From the outset, the entire ward displayed a worrying lack of critical thinking, as if they would hang a monkey if the police told them it was a French spy. Dr. Anandan on Sovereign Ward stands out for all the wrong reasons. She is dismissive, lacks empathy, and seems incapable of truly listening to the patients in her care. Rather than offering support, she appears to gain gratification from asserting power over vulnerable individuals. Her conduct is manipulative, blending elements of “help and advise” with control and abuse—only serving to confuse and retraumatise those she’s meant to support. She doesn't prioritise her patients needs and seems to lack the critical thinking necessary for nuanced clinical judgment. Her passive acceptance of anything told to her by authority figures is a sign of this. Her rigid, reductionist worldview treats everything in simplistic cause-and-effect terms. In her role, that mean she has a mindset of someone who would fundamentally fails to grasp the complexity of trauma and mental health. For example, assuming a patient lacks insight or understanding into their condition simply because they don’t elaborate in a group setting—rather than considering they might be uncomfortable or guarded—is textbook black-and-white thinking. Her advice is often questionable: telling academically capable patients to avoid primary sources, for instance, reflects a poor understanding of research and learning. Her attitude is elitist, condescending, and at times, overtly mocking. Even otherwise decent staff members seem to laugh along with her due to the dominant culture she sets—one shaped more by hierarchy than healing. She frequently interrupts, talks over patients, and dominates conversations, leaving no room for collaborative care. Her approach reflects a pathological obsession with her own sense of power and control. Her judgment is compromised by confirmation bias. She routinely dismisses information that doesn’t align with her preformed views. This makes her assessments not only flawed but actively misleading. As an academic, she demonstrates weak intellectual standards. Her reductionist thinking is also relevant here, as if she was able to think holistically, she wouldn't have nearly messed up my diagnosis, trying to change it from bipolar disorder to BPD without so much as a conversation to involve me. Seeing how someone is currently presently as how they are consistently, again, classic black-and-white thinking. She suggested I stop reading the DSM, reflecting her elitist condescension and inflated sense of self-importance. In reality, it’s her who should put it down. Her rigid thinking and inability to think critically would be better suited to a career like accounting, where such an approach may actually be an advantage—keeping her well away from vulnerable people. But of course, that isn’t as appealing as having power over others. NPD Red Flags Grandiose self-importance – check Lack of empathy – check Requires excessive admiration – check Believes they are “elite” or superior – check Interpersonally exploitative (manipulative) – check Arrogant or haughty behaviours/attitudes – check Preoccupation with power – check Black-and-white thinking – check Inability to accept feedback or criticism? Almost certainly—especially after reading this. Hopefully the GMC will accept it better than she will. She should be struck off—a liability to any patient that goes near her.
