Improving Leigh Market
Background
Our proposed projects are going to have a huge impact on the Market, increasing the footfall for all of the traders. However the building faces numerous challenges. The Market is bisected by a trade entrance to the high street, causing potential safety issues and reducing usability. The uninviting façade and poor signage reduces desirability for the public to enter. Once inside the Market Hall, it is dimly lit with no natural light, making for a somewhat claustrophobic experience. Furthermore the high rent prices for stall traders makes starting a business within the Market difficult.
Despite this Leigh Market continues to be successful, even in the current climate, when so many other local markets are not. We believe there are many chances to improve the Market and to turn it into a key part of the town centre offering.
Proposal
We would like to engage with the market traders and current owners of the market, Wigan Council to see how we can work together to improve our town's market.
